Third-Party Application Integration - A Practical Approach

Many Virtual Ticket customers have legacy systems for accounting, inventory control, priority shipping, and more. These third-party systems often contain data that correlates with production data collected in Virtual Ticket. Such systems do not need to remain autonomous, nor do they require that their data be manually re-keyed into Virtual Ticket. Whether the third-party system in question is due to be retired, or will continue operating in parallel with Virtual Ticket, the question remains, "How can I best access information from a third-party system in Virtual Ticket?"

Have you ever tried collaborating with a group of people when none of you had the same tools? Perhaps nobody had the same version of the application, or only part of the collaboration team owned the pricey software required. If you've ever run in to this, no doubt you'll agree that it's a pretty difficult and frustrating experience for everyone involved. For example, in most PDF proofing workflows, unless everyone has Acrobat Professional OR someone remembered to save the PDF so that Adobe Reader users could annotate the file, it is unlikely that you could all review the proof and attach your comments in one central location. Counting on everyone to be on the same page only works when you’re all speaking the same language, or in this case, using the same tools....

Requirements Aren't for Everyone

Several years ago, I was the Virtual Ticket System Administrator at a prepress shop. Part of my responsibilities were to make sure the staff collected complete, accurate and consistent data in Virtual Ticket. If any deficiency in the data collection was found, it was my job to investigate and enforce compliance. In fact, the earnestness with which I undertook my responsibilities soon earned me the nickname, "VT Police".
